UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI MALAYSIA
The programme for this independence course exposes students to practices in the workshop and the real life of construction on site (students are required to observe and record what they have seen in the form of daily activities logbook and a final comprehensive construction report). The exposure to these real construction practices provides awareness to students on various trades and difficulties in preparing construction works on site (construction field operations) and workshop (exposure to the equipment used). This course deals with the principles and fundamental knowledge of construction practices that include construction-related problems and data management. Learning methods through self-experience and teamwork (peer learning) are included.
Therefore, this virtual lab is designed to introduce architecture students to the practical aspects of timber joinery before they enter the physical lab as an introduction to basic construction in the architectural field. Students will construct a step-by-step procedure to construct timber joinery as specified in the virtual lab. It focuses on developing instrumental and practical skills, understanding safety procedures, and applying theoretical knowledge in a simulated environment. Students will interact with a 3D model of a timber joinery process, selecting timber types, tools, and methods for joint construction. The simulator provides immediate feedback, evaluating the method and sequence taken by the user and offering a performance assessment at the end of the exercise.
This virtual lab aims to provide a comprehensive and interactive learning experience, preparing students for hands-on activities in the physical lab and enhancing their understanding of traditional Malay timber joinery techniques.
